| Well, I wasn’t
really thinking of tanning your bod while lounging on an ice flow.
But, come to think of it, there are some people who might find that exhilarating.
Hello, again. I know you will have some nice vacations, close by or far away, to look forward to. Planning is the most important part of any vacation. It will make or break a wonderful trip. No matter how beautiful the place, how exciting or how much fun your fellow travelers may be, if your living arrangements are poor and the vacation area is inaccessible, (like, maybe, an ice flow) you can have a frustrating vacation. Being young should not mean that you have little or no hand in the planning stage of a trip. On the contrary, you should begin as soon as possible to take part in discussing and planning your next vacation. This includes any summer camp you may consider attending. I am sure many of you have stories to tell and suggestions to make. This is the place to do it. We will be talking about travel and vacations, big and small, long and short. Careful planning is important for everyone and especially for those of us with different lifestyles, disabilities or special medical needs. For instance, for those with diabetes the storage of daily insulin is important but so is the availability of help should medication be lost or spoiled. No matter what your needs, should you desire medical advice or assistance from a knowledgeable professional you have the right to expect such assistance to be readily available. For those who use motorized chairs or scooters, the availability of a place to recharge your batteries is very important to consider. This can be done fairly easily in hotel rooms. The scooter is becoming very popular for those who do not regularly use a mobility device but wish to conserve energy while keeping their freedom to coast around as long as they want to. The terrain in the area you plan to visit is very important to the success of your vacation. We will discuss available transportation. Paratransit services exist in many parts of the country. You can find transportation for people with disabilities in many, but not all, cities. Your handicap parking placard is also transferable. It can be used in other cities and other states. But it is worth double-checking all of this before you travel. A little extra caution and work can help you avoid unpleasant surprises. In this section of 3RD-Person we will be looking into different vacation spots and travel modes. There are cruise ships that stay on the water and those that make stops at exotic ports. The Caribbean is a beautiful place and Jamaica and St. Thomas are magnificent ports-of-call to look forward to. Yosemite, to your right, >>>>> is in your own back yard, as are many other wonderful destinations in these United States. 3rd Person will cover many places and many issues within the realm of Travel and Vacation. We will discuss how to make things happen. You can add your two-cents-worth and help the cause. In the introduction page we briefly discussed the ADA and laws guaranteeing accessibility. Here we see if, and how, the laws are being followed to facilitate freedom to move about, to travel, both inside and outside of the United States. Some companies are going beyond what they are required to do. Recently, one cruise ship company decided to renovate and make accessible not only the new ships under construction but also their older ships. They plan to make ALL ships accessible. We will also
look at great travel and vacation possibilities. We will check out national
parks, camping facilities, cruises, international travel, hotels, motels,
bed and breakfast facilities, amusement parks, seaside resorts and much
more. Remember, you can and should ask questions and make suggestions about
what you find in this section.
Travel
light! Remember, a moving target is harder to hit!
