BREAKTHROUGHS
This is a wonderful time to be alive. We are surrounded by the results of great advances in science and technology. The World Wide Web allows us to communicate without voice, in the privacy of our own homes, and with people of different countries and cultures around the world.
The computer is our entry to the web and access to information about other people in the great global village of the 21st Century. It can bring knowledge, increase opportunities to learn, and enable contacts across national and international boarders. Modern technology, at its best, penetrates borders, collapses stifling boundaries and liberates human beings to be their best. It can provide the basis for equality among the peoples of the earth.

There are mechanical hands that use sign language to facilitate communication between people and computers that talk back to you. Many new medications, treatment techniques, and surgical procedures are being developed every day. New information is being shared by research teams around the world. The rapid transmission of information makes medical breakthroughs, in otherwise slow-moving areas of scientific research, a reality.  Something that can affect the life of the person with a special medical need, such as the new method of administering insulin through a disposable pen-like device, promises to make life easier for those folks with diabetes who can use it.

New research on spinal cord damage and repair is not only promising but is already improving the lives of many people who are quadriplegic or paraplegic. A new emphasis is being placed on this disability. It is the emphasis on maintaining the total body health. The need to maintain good range of motion, circulation, muscle mass, bone strength and bone density is being addressed by new exercise programs. Exercise is being aided and enhanced by devices employing electronic impulses. These devices stimulate muscles cut off from the body’s natural “electric impulses” of the central nervous system. Even though spinal cord injury causes a break in this most wonderful of all power systems, keeping those muscles active through the use of the power backup devices will keep the body ready for spinal cord regeneration. It is pretty close now.  The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is instrumental in fundraising for research in spinal cord and nerve regeneration. And it is coming along fast.

What happens in your life is important and worth sharing with others. We each have something that will help another. Sharing your ideas and knowledge is the best way to improve life for everyone, including your self. In this section of our web site we will talk about methods and devices for communication, support, mobility, treatment and healing. We can discuss particular needs and how you handle them. Keep in touch and keep on top of it all.
